Over the past 5 years, climate change and other disasters including global pandemics have enslaved millions of people.
According to a new report by the International Labor Organization (ILO), Walk Free, and the International Organization for Migration, around 50 million people around the world have become targets of forced labor and forced marriages.
The number has increased by 25 percent since 2016, and the report coined the term modern slavery for these individuals.
Various surveys were conducted in more than 180 countries for the report, after which these results came out.
According to the report, employment and education sectors have been adversely affected by Covid-19, armed conflict and climate change, increasing poverty, insecure migration, and gender-based violence, all of which increase the risk of modern-day slavery.
The report said that the current rate of slavery can be reduced or eliminated by providing better laws, stronger legal protection, and support to women, girls, and the vulnerable.
According to the report, between 2016 and 2021, the rate of forced labor has increased by 11 percent and a total of 28 million people are victims of it.
The number of children among them is quite high, due to which the report emphasizes the need for immediate control of the problem.
Similarly, the number of victims of forced marriages is 22 million, of which two-thirds are women and girls.
