History made in Iraq, independent candidate became the country's president

Baghdad: The Iraqi parliament has elected independent candidate and politician Abdul Latif Muhammad Rashid as the new president of the country.

According to foreign media reports, voting was held in the Iraqi parliament to elect the new president of the country, during which 162 members of the house of 269 voted for their nominee Abdul Latif Rashid.

While his rival candidate incumbent President Barham Saleh got only 99 votes, the new president was elected by secret ballot.

According to political experts, after the election of the new president, the way for the establishment of a new government has been paved and the political stalemate in the country for a year has ended.

Seventy-eight-year-old Rashid is an engineer by profession and has a higher education from the UK. He was the Minister of Water Resources in Iraq from 2003 to 2010.

A rocket was fired at the Green Zone before the election of a new president in Parliament.

According to an army statement, nine rockets fell near the Green Zone, injuring at least 10 people, including members of the security forces.
