Almost 77 years have passed since the independence of Pakistan and during this time, while the governments were formed with the blessing of the military establishment, the democratically elected governments faced problems while completing their term, ended or military dictators overthrew their governments.
Let's see how many political parties have been banned in Pakistan so far:
Communist Party of Pakistan
In July 1954, the Communist Party of Pakistan was banned on charges of overthrowing the government of Liaquat Ali Khan, the country's first prime minister.
In 1951, the plot to overthrow the government was blamed on Major General Akbar Khan, who was allegedly supported by the USSR (now Russia) at the time.
General Akbar, his wife, renowned poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Communist Party Secretary General Syed Sajjad Zaheer were also arrested on the charge of this conspiracy.
Jamaat e Islami
Jamaat-e-Islami also faced ban during the first Pakistani military president Ayub Khan. In 1964, the Ayub government outlawed Jamaat-e-Islami on charges of anti-state activities and foreign funding, arresting key leaders and closing offices. Sealed. Later, Jamaat-e-Islami approached the Supreme Court, which lifted the ban and restored Jamaat-e-Islami.
Awami League
On March 26, 1971, then President General Yahya Khan announced the ban on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Awami League, saying that Sheikh Mujib's Non-Cooperation Movement was a coup, violated and desecrated the Pakistani flag.
General Yahya said that Sheikh Mujib tried to run a parallel government while ruling the country, he fueled violence and instability in the country, the soldiers deployed in East Pakistan were mocked and humiliated.
National Awami Party
The National Awami Party came into existence in 1967 after the separation of Maulana Bhashani and Khan Abdul Wali Khan from the real National Awami Party. Wali Khan's National Awami Party was renamed Awami National Party after the formation of Bangladesh.
National Awami Party was banned twice in 8 years, first in 1971 by General Yahya Khan and second time by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1975.
The National Awami Party was then re-formed, first as the National Democratic Party and then as the Awami National Party.
Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz
In May 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs banned the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz Irizar party.
Jasqam was very famous for her opposition to CPEC.
Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan
The Punjab government banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan in April 2021 after several police personnel were killed in violent incidents.
The provincial government had sought a ban on Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan on the basis of the Terrorism Act 1997, against which the TLP filed a petition and then the government agreed to lift the ban on the TLP and in November 2021, Saad Rizvi, became the head of the party.
