The interim government of Bangladesh has decided to remove all deputy commissioners and mayors from their posts across the country.
According to Bangladeshi media, several deputy commissioners expressed their reluctance to fulfill their responsibilities in the current situation.
According to the local media, the Deputy Commissioners had already discussed with the senior officials regarding their withdrawal from the field administration and as a result, it was decided to remove all the Deputy Commissioners from their posts.
According to Bangladeshi media, the interim government has also removed 1,873 representatives of local governments, including the mayors of all 12 city corporations of Bangladesh.
The government has also appointed administrators to take over the responsibilities of sacked mayors.
Bangladeshi media say the dismissed mayors were supported by the Awami League and have not returned to their offices since Hasina Wajid's government was ousted on August 5.
According to local media, 9 of the 12 sacked mayors are fugitives, with the absence of local government officials disrupting day-to-day affairs that led to their sacking.
